Project Neon is the talk of the town!

I just realized I posted everywhere but here that Project Neon is in the Talk of the Town section of the current issue of The New Yorker. Very exciting! If you’re a subscriber, you can find it online here. If not, well, check out this link. I can also reveal that on Thursday they’ll be posting a slideshow of my New York City neon photos on their website—I’ll post the link once that’s live.

I was out last night taking a few pictures (including this shot from the Diamond District):

I’m also still working on the Kickstarter rewards and the app, so it’s been pretty much all Project Neon all the time around here. I’m hoping it will calm down a bit in a couple of weeks, and I can return to semi-regular Catasterist updates. Until then, I’ll see you in Neonsville!

Updates on Project Neon!

Hello there. In case you missed it elsewhere, there are two Project Neon updates. First, a story I wrote about chasing neon was published today on Urban Omnibus. Second, the Project Neon blog is now live over on Tumblr. Every week I’ll visit another neon-ified establishment in New York City, and I’ll post a picture and a short story on the blog. Check out the Subscribe page for various means of keeping up to date.

I have approximately a million Catasterist posts waiting in the queue, but I’m also in the process of recovering from the pink eye. Gross, I know, right? So I’m going to bed early tonight, but I’ll be back soon with more architecture & design. Yup.

Tomorrow is the centennial of one of my favorite things on earth: neon signage.

Do you know what tomorrow (December 3rd) is? It is a happy anniversary—the centennial of the introduction of neon signage. Whoooo! Happy birthday, neon! I am trying not to think that neon’s life span might be drawing to an end—I’ve seen for myself that there are still amazing and beautiful neon signs to be found all over New York, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, Milwaukee, Baltimore, and other big cities and small towns across the country. Well, maybe not all over, but enough places that I don’t despair of living in an LED world. At least not yet. But neon signs are expensive to instal, to run, and to repair, so I fear for the future as more and more of the largest and most amazing signs fall into disrepair or are replaced by (shudder) LEDs.

Tomorrow evening after the sun goes down (oh so early these days!), I’m going to stop and admire the glow of electrified neon (there are a couple of good signs near my new work!), sometimes lurid and sometimes cheerful, that promises all kinds of things from frozen custard to fresh fish. And I realize looking through my Flickr photos that I have done a poor job of documenting New York’s neon. That needs to change, starting tomorrow.

I hope neon signs are around to light up the night a hundred years in the future.

Inspired by this amazing photo essay of vintage Portland neon and the wonderful accompanying story (funny to see a photo there almost exactly like one I have hanging on my wall!) spotted over in the Uni Watch ticker today, I think I need to take my camera out and methodically document some of New York’s best neon. An especially good photo project now that the days are shorter, since neon is one of the few things that looks better at night, though I may have to wait until I get back into the world of daily commuters who carry unlimited MetroCards for all the jaunting around it will involve. And I’ve got rather a lot of projects going on at the moment (and another secret one in development), so it will probably have to wait a bit to gather steam.

Do you know some good NYC neon I should include? Let me know so I don’t miss it! Comment below, or send me an email.

Happy New Year's, everyone.

Yesterday I bought some cava (that we didn’t even drink yet!) at this liquor stop near work with lovely neon signs:

Then to welcome in the new year last night, Paul and I went to this fantastic Brooklyn tradition, the steam whistles that the Cheif Engineer at Pratt collects and hooks up to the steam feed from the engine room every New Year. It was LOUD! and cold, but did I mention LOUD! And steamy. And there was a calliope conrolled with an electronic keyboard. The engine room was closed to visitors sadly, but we could peer in through the windows. It’s in a beautiful building (it’s an historic landmark building). A great Brooklyn New Year’s Eve. (Here are some better pix−I was too cold to be a good photographer.)

Here’s wishing everyone a happy, healthy 2009.
